PAUL “TONY” HINKLE (Deceased) Inducted: January 19, 1974 in Richmond, IN Date of Birth: December 19, 1898 in Logansport, IN High School Attended: Calumet, IN Graduated: 1916 College Attended: University of Chicago Graduated: 1920 College Honors: Played 3 years of football, baseball and basketball, earning 9 letters. Coaching Experience: Football coach at Butler University from 1921 to August 1970, except for 4 years in the Navy during WW II; coached football and basketball and assisted in baseball for 2 years while at Great Lakes, MI. Coaching Honors: Most winning coach in the Indiana Collegiate Conference with a 19-year mark of 75-29-2 in football; won ICC titles and 2 ties; coached in the East-West Collegiate All-Star game against the Russian All-Stars; his basketball, football, and baseball teams at Butler won more than 1000 games during his coaching tenure. Special Recognition: Also served as athletic director at Butler for almost 40 years; 1965 Butler Board of Trustees re-named the field house in his honor; member of the James Naismith Helms Foundation and Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame; former President of the National Collegiate Basketball Coaches Association; in August 1971, he was selected to the United Saving Helms Athletic Foundation for the 3rd time, becoming the only man in American Sports ever to be so honored; retired in August 1970 and served as special assistant to President for Community Affairs at Butler University. Coach Hinkle passed away September 21, 1992. |
